3 Idiots (३ इडियट्स) is a 2009 Indian coming of age comedy-drama film co-written, edited and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Abhijat Joshi wrote the screenplay. It was loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. The film stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Omi Vaidya, Parikshit Sahni and Boman Irani.
Two friends are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them "idiots".
Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi want to re-unite with their fellow collegian, Rancho, after faking a stroke aboard an Air India plane, and excusing himself from his wife - trouser less - respectively. Enroute, they encounter another student, Chatur Ramalingam, now a successful businessman, who reminds them of a bet they had undertaken 10 years ago. The trio, while recollecting hilarious antics, including their run-ins with the Dean of Delhi's Imperial College of Engineering, Viru Sahastrabudhe, race to locate Rancho, at his last known address - little knowing the secret that was kept from them all this time.

Synopsis:
10 years after college, Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), a famous wildlife photographer, as well as Raju Rastogi, are searching for their former best friend, Ranchoddas Chanchad, after he disappeared post-college. In the process, they relive the misadventures he had with his friends Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and Ranchoddas "Rancho" Shamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan) while they were students at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in India. Farhan aspired to become a wildlife photographer, but was pursuing an engineering degree to appease his father. Raju works towards the degree because he needs to improve his family's financial situation, and Rancho is unique in actually taking joy in building machines. Rancho incurs the wrath of college's dean, Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe a.k.a. 'Virus' (Boman Irani), by giving creative and unorthodox answers in class and living by the philosophy that one should pursue excellence, not success, as success will happen if excellence is achieved.
The trio get up to all kinds of boyish japes, usually in tit-for-tat reactive revenge for some action of the disciplinarian Virus. Finally, Farhan and Raju pee on the door of his house but Virus sees Raju and the next day he calls Raju to his office. Virus tells Raju to type a letter to his parents informing them about his termination from college. Raju pleads to stay, and Virus concedes that he stay provided that he modifies the expulsion letter to expel Rancho instead. Conflicted between his family and friends, Raju attempts to commit suicide by jumping from the window. He is rushed to hospital and due to his injuries he can hear people but cannot respond or move his body. Eventually, Raju recovers and realizes that he has always been afraid with the challenges of his life. Raju goes for a job interview which every engineering student has to do for their future job before graduating. He eventually gets accepted but virus gets furious when he discovers this and in revenge Virus sets the questions for Raju's final exam so that Raju will fail, and therefore not be able to graduate. Meanwhile, Farhan is convinced by Rancho to go tell his dad what he really wants to be is a wildlife photographer. Therefore Farhan goes to his father, Mr. Qureshi (Pareekshit Sahani)and is able to convince him to support his dreams. Fearing that Raju will not get the job he sorely needs to support his family, Rancho and Farhan steal the questions; however, they are caught and sentenced to expulsion.

Through every quick-witted song and dance number, through every comedic scene, through every instance of dramatic despair, emotionally alive moment, solemnly poignant sequence, suspenseful setup, to a lovely, heartfelt conclusion, 3 Idiots is a wonderful, invaluable endeavor in the world of film. Its actors are beautifully fitting for their roles, assisted by a script so human and true to life that it is honestly hard to believe, and captured through beautifully alive cinematography to collectively give us a beautiful package not just in the figurative sense. This is arguably one of the best comedies I've ever seen. - Steve "The Schmuck" Pulaski @ letterboxd
